Do you know the difference between 'baby blues' and postpartum depression? The 'baby blues will suddenly appear, and then suddenly disappear. The symptoms will persist for about 10% of mothers. The symptoms of postpartum depression can include, loss of appetite, fatigue, not being able to concentrate, emotional lows and highs, sadness, fearful of hurting the baby, or lack of interest or excessive interest in the baby. Understand that women with postpartum don't experience all of these symptoms, they will often feel different ones on different days, or even the same symptoms day in and day out. Since they believe they should not feel anything but joy, they might start to feel shame and guilt and eventually become isolated.




It saddens me to say that we do not know yet what causes post partum depression. Factors such as lack of sleep, isolation after the baby is born, anxiety and hormones that affect the brains chemistry are what some researchers think could potentially cause postpartum depression. Many women believe that motherhood is this wondrous awesome thing that should be the most rewarding experience in your life. On a single day it could be the most gratifying and the hardest ob you will ever have. Unfortunately some new moms become extremely depressed when all of these things happen after a baby is born.



It's not always easy for you to identify postpartum depression in your own life. It isn't uncommon to think you are not feeling great due to lack of sleep you're experiencing. So if a friend or loved one expresses their concern, pay attention to what they're saying. Call your personal doctor straight away when you're seeing the symptoms in your own life. A physician will be an important part of your recovery, you can not depend on just attending support groups. Don’t feel ashamed or guilty. You will be feeling better soon, the support from both your doctor and friends will have you feeling normal once again.
